Report card for BPO industry in Cebu

WITH Cebu being considered a top emerging destination for business process outsourcing (BPO), stakeholders should work together to sustain the growth of the industry.

Jerry Rapes, chairman of this year’s Cebu Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Congress, said one of the action plans of the industry is to come up with a “report card” that will identify factors that landed the province in Tholon’s top BPO destination list last year.

“We should have done something right. But we have to know what got us (to the top), for us to know what to do to sustain the growth,” he said.

Aside from the report card, the ICT industry should also prepare a set of goals it wants to achieve in the next two years.

These goals should include increasing the number of “technopreneurs” in the ICT industry, said Rapes.

To bring in more technopreneurs, Rapes said the industry also needs people who understand technology and are willing to finance such ventures.

“There are a lot of opportunities for technopreneurs in the country,” he said, adding that support facilities are also put in place to help “usher in” technopreneurs.

Rapes cited the incubation lab at the University of the Philippines as one of these facilities that may help the industry look for people “who have a global mindset but (are interested in) local execution.”

Aside from capitalists who will support technopreneurs, the ICT industry in Cebu also needs to diversify its markets since at present, most of the ICT companies that have outsourced in Cebu are based in the United States.

During the ICT Congress, which one of the highlights of the Cebu Business Month, Rapes said industry stakeholders will have the chance to learn more about the intellectual property law and how to develop human resources for the industry.

The ICT Congress, which will begin on June 25, and the Cebu Business Month are initiated by the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
