BY consolidating their operations, local and international companies with offices in Cebu have managed to “stabilize” their businesses, keep their workers, and even hire more to enhance their operations.
This was revealed by Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) 7 Director Elias Cayanong, who said his office will host or co-host at least 69 jobs fair in Central Visayas this year.

About 44 jobs fair have been held in the region so far, Cayanong told Sun.Star Cebu yesterday.
Dole has not received any “serious” case of retrenchment by Cebu-based companies since the second quarter this year.
This quarter, Dole has not received any job displacement-related reports.
For Cayanong, this situation is an indication of economic recovery.
He said companies severely affected by the crisis last year and have to retrench are recalling their former employees.
He cited Cebu Mitsumi Inc. that re-hired 2,000 workers, Pentax Cebu Philippines Corp. that re-hired more than 700 workers, and Lear Automotive Philippines that is processing some 600 applications.
In a separate interview, Rhoda Villaflor of the human resource department of Cebu Mitsumi Inc. said the company has 12,000 employees. But the Danao-based electronics manufacturing company needs more engineers and technicians.
Villaflor said the company is planning to “hire as much as they can,” adding that it can also accommodate trainees for electronic assembly through the apprenticeship program of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.
Cebu Mitsumi is one of the 30 local employers that joined 40 overseas companies and manpower staffing service firms in a jobs fair at the Mandaue City Sports Complex yesterday.
The Mandaue City Government hosted the event in partnership with Dole and the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) as part of the MCCI’s Mandaue Business Month (MBM) activities.
Mandaue City’s Public Employment Service Office said the fair attracted about 2,000 applicants.
MBM 2009 chair Philip Tan disclosed that jobs fair organizers hoped that at least 1,000 would be hired on the spot, to beat last year’s 700 on-the-spot hires.
Cayanong said applicants in job fairs now have more chances of getting hired since Dole implements a pre-registration and pre-qualification system, which identifies suitable jobs for them.
He pointed out that a jobs fair is not only about placement but also involves identifying skills of applicants and referring them for training, if necessary, to qualify for their target jobs.
He noted that Cebu’s strength is in tourism, business process outsourcing and construction whose continuous growth demands increasing workforce.
“While some industries are not performing well (due to the global financial crisis) like furniture exports, for instance, we are training and retraining displaced workers (so they will) qualify (for jobs) in Cebu’s other sunshine industries, including tourism, call centers and construction,” he said.
