AFTER the business-process outsourcing (BPO) and knowledge-process outsourcing, the Philippines will now be bidding to become a global leader in the field of creative-process outsourcing (CPO).

Weng Bagadion, president of the Animation Council of the Philippines, said the country has what it takes to successfully carve a niche for the Filipino brand of animation and creative designs, especially with the Filipinos’ inherent talent in designing anything from print animation to product modelling.

Add to this the other strengths of the local industry that include lower costs, consistent quality and speed in delivering output, English proficiency, and the ability to comprehend concepts and storylines.

“I am personally advocating to the various agencies like BPAP [Business Process Outsourcing of the Philippines], DTI [Department of Trade and Industry], and DFA [Department of Foreign Affairs] that the Philippines should claim CPO. We want our own brand of animation. If one is familiar with Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the Filipino industry has matured to a point where we are now seeking for self-actualization,” Bagadion said.

Under CPO would fall the animation and game development industries, music and sound engineering, advertising, film, industrial design, architecture, comics, photography, publishing, and even those that fall under corporate communication such as writing and conceptualization.

The industry currently provides jobs to 5,000 local animators, and generated $110 million in export revenues in 2008.

Animation has been one of the highlights in the yearly e-Services, Global Sourcing Conference and Exhibition, a government-led ICT/BPO trade platform.
