CEBU, Philippines - The Islands Group recently bared its long-term plan of developing more unique products and services, specifically in preserving and promoting culture in a destination.

Islands Group president and chief executive officer (CEO) Jay P. Aldeguer said that aside from expanding its hotel arm, the Islands Stay Hotel chain, in major tourism destinations in the Philippines, the group is also on the process of discovering unique products and services to make the company’s operation a one-stop-shop for tourism related requirements.

The success of its Islands Banca Cruise, which modernize the “island hopping” experience in Cebu, as well as the growth of its retail chain Islands and More, the Islands Shuttle Services, and the Talima Adventure Park, has further encourage the company to introduce distinctive products and services for travelers.

In the long term, Aldeguer said that the Group will be synergized becoming a dedicated tourism promoter in an area, such as front-liners in its Islands Souvenir Shops (ISI) across the Philippines will be trained and equipped with information to guide tourists, and answer questions from travelers.

This means, that any Islands Group employee can become an instant tour-guide, the one that will be knowledgeable in a particular destination.

Following the unique concept of Island’s Jeepney, Aldeguer said the company may also invest in creating service that is more local. He mentioned the probability of introducing “Island’s Trisikad” experience, among others.

“We have to constantly look for new products and services to be offered for tourists—the ‘Island’s way’,” Aldeguer said.

In the next five years, the group is expected to penetrate in the major tourism destination in the country, bringing its innovative tourism-related products and services that will excite both local and foreign travelers.

He said the Philippines has a lot to offer and tourism opportunity for investors is huge. However, products and services should be unique and travelers now are more adventurous demanding for services will make them experience the culture of a destination.

However, Aldeguer said although there are a lot of potential tourism destinations in the Philippines, the Local Government Units (LGUs) should be empowered to recognize the potential of their respective localities, such as improving the infrastructure, transportation accessibility, and promotion.

He said there are still a lot of “undiscovered” destinations in the country. But, readiness is important in order to take advantage of the “wealth” in tourism.(FREEMAN)
