THE business process outsourcing and tourism sectors in the country continue to post a good number of job vacancies amid the global financial crisis, said an official of an online recruitment network.
JobsDB.com Philippines sales manager Philip Pogiongko said that in the company’s network, many international and local employers announce vacancies for positions related to accounting, engineering, information technology, construction and seafaring jobs, among others.
Countries like Canada and Australia are looking for several skilled workers, including plumbers, while in the Middle East, hotel and construction companies have announced their need for more personnel.
Pogiongko also disclosed that JobsDB is working with a big American firm that will be needing some 3,000 information technology workers from the Philippines.
The demand is high that Pogiongko urged the abundant number of nursing graduates to consider applying in the medical departments of hotels or airlines. He said these graduates may also consider re-training to find jobs in other sectors.
Mismatch
He noted that the skills of job applicants sometimes do not match those of companies with vacancies.
“What matters now more than a college diploma is that you have the skills that meet the demands of the job,” he said.
Over the weekend, JobsDB and the Department of Tourism kicked off the two-day Trabaho sa Turismo Fair, which posted more than 8,000 jobs. Participating employers included hotels, airlines, call centers and staffing agencies, among others.
The global economic slowdown has forced several manufacturers and export companies in Cebu to cut jobs. JobsDB
Philippines coordinated with some local companies to help displaced workers find jobs somewhere else, Pogionko said.
In the past three years, he said, JobsDB has been helping displaced workers find employment in other sectors. The firm has assisted almost 1,000 displaced workers. (NRC)
