BEING a coffee addict and inspired by his travels abroad, veterinarian Ody Camarillo recently opened a business to merge his interests.
Camarillo opened Ody’s Coffee House Wine and Beer on D. Jakosalem St. and offered

Cebuano pet lovers a place to hang out while enjoying their coffee blend.

“(Drinking) coffee is my way of de-stressing,” said Camarillo, who is on call for 24 hours. He is the owner of Cebu Veterinary Doctors, which has five outlets in Cebu. He also runs a distribution company for veterinary products in the Visayas-Mindanao areas.

“With this hectic schedule, I make it to a point to go somewhere far from the city to drink coffee or beer just to unwind,” he said.

Location

Camarillo said he first set up a coffee and wine bar at home but later decided to move out. His first coffee business was at the second floor of his animal hospital for his clients.

Earlier this year, he purchased the branch of Cream ‘n Cupz at One Acacia Place for P800,000, which he would improve and change into Ody’s Coffee House Wine and Beer.

Camarillo later found what he thought was a good location on D. Jakosalem St. where there aren’t coffee outlets yet.

“I found the area promising, there are no restaurants or coffee shops nearby, although, there are a lot of office establishments and a condo-hotel in the area,” he said.

Camarillo invested P8 million to set up Ody’s Coffee House, which he plans to position as a “pet-friendly” coffee shop. He plans to put-up a Pets Point Corner inside the shop, where basic commodities or over-the-counter items for pets are sold.

Apart from serving the usual coffee blends, the coffee house will also serve imported beers and wine, as inspired by his trips abroad.

Ody’s Coffee House targets the A and B market class. The facility sits on a 140-square meter area and can accommodate 60 people. The coffee shop also has a function room.

Camarillo said their edge is that they offer upsize servings for coffee. He is also planning to come up with value meals, apart from existing food items such as cakes and breakfast meals.

While Camarillo said that he is still a new player in the coffee business, he is ready for the challenge.

He said he will continue scouting for strategic locations for his coffee business and might consider expanding through franchising, depending on the performance of his two coffee outlets.

“Another reason I ventured into this business, which is completely different from my line, is that I like challenges. The coffee, wine and beer businesses are lifestyle-driven and we have a market to cater to, which is similar to having pets. It’s already a lifestyle,” Camarillo said.
