THE number of visitors to the Philippines increased 12 percent in the first nine months of the year, according to the latest records of the Department of Tourism (DOT).
DOT said 2,887,715 visitors were recorded in the period, higher than the 2,577,775 arrivals logged in the same period last year.

DOT said the biggest number of arrivals was recorded in July, at 360,784. February and January posted the highest growth rate of 18.52 percent and 17.31 percent, respectively. Other months posted double-digit growth rates except for March and May, DOT said.
The East Asian region is still the largest contributor of arrivals, accounting for 47.31 percent of overall traffic. The region posted an increase of 17.27 percent from 1,165,072 the previous year to 1,366,301 arrivals this year.
North America, on the other hand, contributed 19.05 percent to the country’s total visitor figures, with 550,224 arrivals in the first nine months of the year. The figure is 5.97 percent higher than the 519,269 arrivals recorded in the same period in 2010.
Visitors from Association of Southeast Asian Nations accounted for 8.46 percent with 244,381 arrivals this year, an increase of 12.94 percent from last year’s figures.
The Korean market is still the country’s top travel market, growing at 29.11 percent and accounting for 23.79 percent in total inbound traffic. About 686,901 Koreans visited the country during the first nine months of the year.
The US market accounted for 16.16 percent of arrivals, the second after Korea, with 466,767 visitors. The arrivals are 4.73 percent higher than the 445,679 recorded a year ago.
The Japanese market contributed the third biggest arrivals of 286,588, composing 9.92 percent of total inbound traffic.
