Consumers urged to shift actions for green economy

Saturday, September 24, 2011

PRIVATE and public consumers are urged to shift their actions from individual consumers seeking to satisfy wants or desires to meeting needs, which aims to improve the use of natural resources by moving individual consumption patterns toward a sustainable consumption.

The continued deterioration of the global environment is evidently seen in the unsustainable pattern of consumption and production.

"There is a need for a sustainable development and a better environment because we have a deficit of 20 percent more natural resources each year, and by 2050, 180 percent-220 percent of earth's biological capacity," said Dr. Anthony Chiu, Chairman of Asia Pacific Roundtable for Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP).

To address this issue, Dr. Chiu urged industrial sectors to adapt the industrial ecology's approach by closing the loop through re-using, recycling and re-manufacturing.

He said this can be achieved if firms are continuously applying preventive environmental strategies to processes, products and services to increase efficiency and reduce risks to humans and environment.

Environmental concerns should be incorporated when designing and delivering services thru minimizing environmental impact from transportation, he added.

He said that we should settle on facts and data of health communities, economic vitality and natural environment for sustainability.

Economic growth and industrialization require intensive use of raw materials and in the process, release of air and water emissions. The pressure is on environment and natural resources, he stressed.
