THE full implementation of the tourism development strategy and product development are two of the important things Ramon Jimenez Jr. should prioritize under his stint as the newly-appointed Department of Tourism (DOT) secretary, stakeholders in Cebu said yesterday.

Islands Group of Companies chief executive officer (CEO) Jay Aldeguer said Jimenez should focus on positioning the country’s top destinations in the global market.

“In this way, the country can fix the products (destinations) accordingly and to properly align the DOT’s plan with the local government units,” he said.

Aldeguer also said the open skies policy should be revisited.

“This is highly critical as we do want more seats flying into the country but not at the expense of our local carriers. So this has to be studied carefully,” he said.

Yesterday, President Benigno Aquino III named Jimenez as the new tourism secretary.

Jimenez is currently senior consultant and joint executive officer of Winner Over Obstacles (WOO) Consultants.

Former clients

He is a former CEO of JimezBasic Adverstising, one of the country’s largest creative advertising agencies whose clients include Jollibee, Selecta Ice Cream, Safeguard, San Miguel and Cebu Pacific.

Jimenez is also the marketing consultant for the Ninoy and Cory Aquino Foundation.

Hotel, Resort and Restaurant Association of Cebu (Hrrac) president Hans Hauri, meanwhile, lauded President Aquino for the “wise decision” to pick Jimenez. He said it offers a “certain air of freshness” in the industry.

He, however, noted that tourism players should also thank former secretary Alberto Lim for the “positive influences he has lent to the tourism industry.”

Under the new administration, Hauri hopes there can be unified collaboration between the department and tourism stakeholders, particularly on the development of tourism promotions as well as the implementation of tourism development strategy.

He also hoped that Jimenez will prioritize the removal of barriers that hinder local airlines from developing business abroad on the basis of free market.

Build on foundation

“We are looking for this new direction as we help provide resources necessary to keep afloat and reach our destination of over six million tourists by 2016,” Hauri said.

Cebu Business Club president Dondi Joseph said that while the country needs a strong tourism, brand we also need infrastructure and product development.

“Secretary Jimenez should not start from scratch but build on the foundation of his predecessors,” Joseph said.
