The retail prices of
construction materials in Metro Manila rose by an average of 5 percent
in July compared to the same month in 2011, with masonry items posting
the highest increase at 13.9 percent.
The retail price
index of plumbing materials in July inched 1.9 percent, with the other
commodity groups posting registering lesser increases, the National
Statistics Office (NSO) reported.
The tinsmithry materials index showed a decline of 2.1 percent.
If compared to June average prices, the cost of select construction materials only increased by 0.5 percent.
Price
reductions were noted in selected plywood, hinges, paints and
tinsmithry materials. However, price increases were observed in cement,
gravel, sand and hollow blocks.
“The
indices of carpentry materials, painting materials and related
compounds and tinsmithry materials posted negative rate of -0.1 percent
during the month. Moreover, the increment in electrical materials index
slowed down to 0.1 percent from 5.3 percent. On the other hand, an
uptick of 6.7 percent was seen in masonry materials index from 4.3
percent. A zero growth was observed in plumbing materials and
miscellaneous construction materials indices,” the NSO report said.
As for the wholesale prices, the statistics office noted a 2.2-percent increase in July compared to the same month last year.
The
sand and gravel index increased by 7.6 percent; concrete products by
2.5 percent; plywood, 3.4 percent; structural steel, 4.2 percent;
tileworks, 3.8 percent; electrical works, 5.1 percent; and painting
works, 4.8 percent.
The increase in July wholesale prices was tempered by the drop in the fuels and lubricants index at -2.1 percent.
