CEBU Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia told mayors and tourism officers of the province to maintain a standard of service to tourists who will visit their respective places.

For the services in resorts, towels should always be clean. This was one of the examples she had given during a recent Provincial Development Council (PDC) meeting at the Capitol Social Hall.

As an offshoot of the local tourism program, Suroy-Suroy Sugbo, Garcia asked mayors to create their own “mini-suroy” or cluster packages. Garcia said the program was intended to bring tourists to towns so they can explore the views and that through the years, it has taken a life of its own. This is why she encouraged mayors to come up with their own “mini-suroy” or cluster packages.

For those who can comply, she will give them a van to use in their tourism program. In coming up with tourism packages in the towns, they will be assisted by tourism students from different universities.

Her assessment of the latest Suroy-Suroy in the south was positive. She said she had noticed improvements in the resorts. Highways and restrooms are cleaner and the public officials’ warmth and support are evident even without the presence of their mayors.

She said majority of the barangay captains and councilors of Barili welcomed the delegates even without the presence of Mayor Teresito Mariñas and Vice Mayor Marlon Garcia who had other important engagements.

Garcia said promoting community-based tourism is key to job creation. She said it will push for economic activity in rural areas. It can also preserve rich cultural heritage.

Garcia previously said the Province is ripe for tourism investment.

During the previous PDC meeting, Garcia encouraged mayors to invest in tourism. Local government units should invest in rooms, restaurants, or adventure tourism and offer tour packages of the towns various scenic spots, she said.
